This problem has been bugging me all night. My old man has a Sony STR-DG820 and has just had Sky HD installed. The sky HD is going to TV via an HDMI (and he has optical as well for Dolby Digital) on the amp because he only has 1 HDMI on the back of the TV and has BD player and XBox 360 as well.

Now does anybody know if there is a way to pass through the Sky HD HDMI A/V signal when the amp is off (in standby). I can do this with my Onkyo TXSR507 but can't seem to find a way to do it on the Sony

My father has the same receiver. I'm pretty certain it won't pass through when on standby.

Couple of questions though? Why does the Sky HD+ go directly to the TV and not via the receiver? You can adjust the inputs so that it takes the video from the HDMI and the audio from the optical.

Basically with that set up I'd have the Sky, BD and XBox all feed the receiver, and the receiver have a single HDMI to the TV. That way no need for a switch box. It should have enough inputs, IIRC 3xHDMI in, 2xOptical in and 1xHDMI out.

Out of curiosity why does he want to pass it through to the TV and not use the receiver?

Can't be done. The 820 needs to be on.

Surely simply switching the amp on is a lot less hassle than going down the HDMI switching route?

tell him it uses about half what his tv does. if that.

anyway, if he wants to do that, id change the wiring to sky box >> hdmi >> tv and sky box >> optical >> amp. yeah it means he'd have to change the tv over but it also means he wont have to have the amp on when watching sky.

This seems to be his existing config. I think he'd still need the amp on for audio, not sure but I don't think the Sky+ HD pass audio over the HDMI.

it does, but only two channel - which would be fine for his tv ::)

edit: sorry just re-read his post, didnt realsie the tv only had one hdmi input. umm...a hdmi switch box is an option i guess? does the sky+ box have analogue outputs? thats another option, if the signle hdmi input on the tv also has an acompanying 3.5mm stereo input
