What happens if a premier league footballer gets a straight red just before he goes to AFCON? Is he still suspended when he returns assuming his team has already played three games?

I wouldn't have thought so. He would be suspended for the next 3 domestic games regardless of whether he's available for them for other reasons.

Because Gabriel got a red in the prem, does that mean he’s suspended for Thursday?
Yep. It's only when a player picks up 5 (or 10) yellows across the season does their suspension only apply to PL games.
