Ok this is an odd one. I have microsoft intellimouse explorer v2 and a logitech wireless keyboard. When I scroll the mouse or use the scroll wheel on the keyboard I get a squealing noise coming from the PC. The noise isn't excessively loud ie with any audio running you wouldn't hear it but with sound off i can hear it from 2 metres away(PC is a HTPC in living room)

I only get it when i'm actually scrolling something ie a web page, not just when scrolling the wheel with no active scrollable document open.

I get this regardless of whether the PC is connected to an amp or not, in fact i'm 100% positive the noise comes directly from the computer chassis. I have experience similar noises on other PC's and I assume it's some form of elctrical interference causing either the psu or some other chip on board the mobo to create noise.

any ideas on how to cure it or at least an explanation of what is making the noise?

p.s. it also happens when you maximise or minimise a window ie same volume but not as scratchy sounding a noise as the mousewheel.

No proper explanation - but you're not alone. Mine also makes a noise if the mouse if plugged into the front panel USB ports, but not into the back, so I thought it was possibly interference with the microphone jack.

had the same problem the other week but only when i scrolled down on this forum!! all other sites were fine. My sound was more of an electrical squeak and only happened when scrolling not when opening/closing pages. It done it for about a week then stopped and its been fine since.

I'll put my hand up here as well.

I had the exact same problem, think it was a MS Intellimouse. The 'squeaking' was particularly apparent when scrolling IE Windows.

Unfortunately, the solution eludes me :(

Sorry matey.

If I remember correctly this used to happen with the Geforce FX5900 graphics card. The solution was to turn off smooth scrolling. Don't know if its the same problem.....Worth a try though.

Yup, read on here a few weeks back that some with 7800s had this issue. Not as common as previous cards (presumably the FX5900 Flave mentions), but there were some instances of it.

Well turning off the minimize/maximize window animation in XP does get rid of the noise when minimizing or maximizing however turning off smooth scroll doesn't help so far with the scroll noise.

I get the exact same issues with my USB MS Intellimouse Explorer 4.0A when using the scroll wheel but recently its gone away without any other config changes. Strange or what as previously used to cause a loud whine whenever the mouse wheel was used on some web pages and not others.

Methinks could have been a webpage issue which affected certain sites since been fixed.
