I ran the test thing to detect optimal settings and it set it to 1.20ghz and 510! which is quite a clock. Now when i try setting them to that it says to run the test, so i do and it fails! It fails everytime i try and bump it up even just 5mhz

Anyone else had this issue? Seems a bit odd that it detects way over stock and wont let me do anything.

in the nvidia control panel u can get it to "detect optimal settings" on the o/c tab (have to have coolbits installed i believe  )

I did this last night on my BFG 7800GT after fitting my Zalman VF900.

Cant remember the exact clock (will check tonight) but it was quite a jump....
I backed off 5mhz or so and ran 3D Mark 06 a few times to be sure all was ok.

Try backing off slightly and see if that helps

Often the auto detect goes higher than the card can cope with, don't know why  My 7800GT used to do that as well.As stated just clock it back down
10Mhz or so,then run 3DMark & check for artifacts ;)

With my card as well, autodetect suggested 490/1120 but the core won't go past 475Mhz in F.E.A.R. and Oblivion, memory goes a bit higher.
