strange  symbols in order emails

I have received two confirmation emails from two different companies, all details are fine, apart from there are many          symbols in dodgy places.

and the emails starts with 

Was viewing this in hotmail website. IE.

Any suggestions of what this could be?

i think so,i am viewing via a web page. there are no images in them. so they could get text or rich text im not sure. they could be html but can see any images so assume rich or normal text.
