Strange behaviour with gfx + cpu overclock

Ok this is a vary strange one.

Equipment as per sig.

cpu is at 3.6gig with a 400 (1600) fsb, multi is at 9, and ram is at 800mhz. cpuvolts are 1.48. Gfx card is a BFG 8800gtx oc2.

I have done multiple orthos runs without probelms for 24+ hrs. Memtest does the whole lot for 18+hrs.

However, when playing 3d game, after a random amount of time (anything from 5 mins to 5hrs), the pc will seemingly freeze. After 3-5 seconds, it will unfreeze, and continue for another 2-3 seconds then freeze again. This keeps happening until either...

a) reboot
b) shut down the 3d app/game

If I shut down the 3d app/game then start up another (or the same) then the freezeing will start again. It is a total pc freeze, teamspeak sound stops, mouse stops etc. Then it will all unfreeze for a moment, rinse repeat. The pc seems fine until I start a 3d game.

It has never blue screened when this is happening or at any other time tbh.

I am sure it is a result of the cpu overclock somehow, as I have been unable to have it happen when running at stock cpu mhz.

Any ideas?

I have tried the release nvidia drivers and betas up to and including 160.03.

I was wondering if anyone else had similiar problems. Seems strange that orthos can run for ever and a day without issue, yet the gfx card is having problems. Also it is strange how it does the exact same thing every time, which doesnt really suggest random instability.

I was getting the same problem with my 8800 GTS, it was because i was running ati tool to monitor temp levels. When i went into a 3D app it would over clock my cards mem and gpu. I reset my clocks to standard and the problem went away, was a shame because the overclock gave me great 3d mark scores but just was not stable in bf2142 which i play most. Strangly it was stable in most other games.
Any how i thought it was my cpu overclock but it turned out to be my gpu over clock that was the problem.

hmm interesting... i have a 8800gtx oc2. It is factory overclocked and running at stock (no overclocking tools installed). I wonder if it playing up somehow. Although I am yet to have it happen when the cpu is at stock mhz, only changing the fsb, leaving volts etc as they are.

well, I had it happen with the cpu at stock :( Will log the temps from now on to see if it is overheating at anypoint.

Playing HL2 for about 3 hrs. No artifacts or anything out of the ordinary during that play time. Then pc just froze up, and went into its freeze-unfreeze cycle.

Temps as follows before just before it died...

logged from everest

motherboard = 30'c
cpu = 36'c
cpu core 1 = 36'c
cpu core 2 = 37'c
gpu = 78'c
gpu diode = 82'c
gpu ambient = 65'c
gpu memory = 79'c

I just ctrl-alt-deleted out of hl2 to get those temps. Whilst in the game it was freeze-unfreeze-freeze etc. Total pc freeze during those freezes, mouse and all. I shut HL2 down and took the numbers from the log.

I then went into the nvidia control panel with the rotating logo. I noticed that there were artifacts on the logo. Check out this fraps vid I took during this HERE. I left the logo spin for a while and after about 2 mins the pc froze-unfroze-froze again. As soon as I start a 3d game from this point it will cause the pc to freeze-unfreeze cycle. If I reboot everything will be fine until some random time has passed and it will freeze-unfreeze cycle again.

This is doing my head in :(

Any thoughts anyone? RMA? It is like 4 days old.
