Strange BSOD issue

I've just upgraded from i5 750 to i7 4770k and I'm having a strange issue with occasional BSODs.

The rest if the he hardware is a Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H motherboard, Corsair Vengeance low profile RAM (2 x 4GB), an ageing (but apparently still rock solid) Enermax Liberty 620W PSU, Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB and OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB ( the last of them that OcUK sold off at a cracking price), and a Gigabyte reference GTX680.

With the exception of the processor and motherboard the ret of the kit has been running happily in my previous i5 system.

The situation is that fairly regularly on boot up, JUST as Windows (7) is about to start I get a BSOD that only comes up for a split second then the PC reboots and won't detect the SSD, which is my boot/OS drive.

I'm unsure if I'm running the latest BIOS, so I need to check that and update if required, but does anyone have any suggestions about the possible cause of higher issue. I'm on a fresh install of Win 7 but that hasn't had any impact, positive or negative, on the problem.

I've memtested the RAM, which is problem free and at the moment I'm running the system at completely stock settings so I'm at a bit of a loss about the cause of the problem.

The only areas I can think of at the moment is the PSU, which I'll admit is old but has been faultless to date (~10 years I think!), or the BIOS version.

All advice gratefully received!

I take it you have the latest IRST drivers installed and ACHI selected in in the bios. And the OS was installed without the hdd connected.

try the ssd on any third party sata ports if you have them, asmedia ect

theres known stability issues with sandforce drives on intel ports atm

IRST drivers installed from supplied DVD in mobo box, but probably not the latest...will get them downloaded.

Also I did install OS with HDD connected...totally forgot about that being a possible issue. Will re-install this pm.

If the PSU has had it I'll get an Antec pro 750W

Quick update that others may find useful:

Turns out that the issue was caused by my SSD (OCZ Vertex 2E). Nothing wrong with it, but the Sandforce SF1222 controller it uses is not compatible with Haswell / Z87 Express. Wazza, you were on the money with that one although it's not a general Sandforce / Z87 issue, but specifically a Sandforce SF1xxx / Z87 issue. Drives using later Sandforce controllers have no issues.

OcUK, being a generally great bunch of folks, delivered my new Samsung 840 EVO SSD to me yesterday (not expected until Monday!) and everything is running perfectly now.
