Strange crash the other day...

Was playing the APB beta on Sunday night when the client crashed (nothing unusual there, it's a beta). I was unable to task-switch or force-close it, so I rebooted, but, for some reason, the computer wouldn't get past POST. It wouldn't display any errors or anything. Wouldn't beep any error messages. It would simply display my CPU information, and, instead of starting to test the RAM, just stop there. Wouldn't even enter CMOS setup.

Tried rebooting several times, tried switching off and cold booting, nothing. Was starting to think that either my RAM or CPU had died, although I thought it would be weird for it to happen so suddenly. I decided to clear the CMOS through the jumper, see if that would help, but, before doing it, I switched it on one last time... and it worked normally!

The crash hasn't recurred since, so I'm not overly worried, but it WAS really strange and I'd like to find out what the **** could have caused something so weird. Anyone have any ideas?

One is on a Gigabyte P35 DS3!:p Don't remember which BIOS revision, will check next time I reboot. Why, is this a known problem with them?

I had a P35 DS3. Sometimes when overclocked it would fail to boot properly, it was a known issue with those boards and some older gigabyte ones. Are you running an OC? Might be time to retest it.

Yep, E2180 OC'ed at 3GHz. It's been sitting at that for nearly 2 years, temps are fine, and it hasn't happened before or since. I'll give it a test when I have some time nonetheless.

I had that problem with an E6750 in mine. It was fine for 18 months and then started to do it once I'd overclocked, despite it being stable. It's definitely a bug, you could try a newer BIOS if there is one. The last for my GA-P35C-DS3R was F11 I think.

I'll check if there's a newer one, I haven't updated it for over a year because it's been rock-solid so far! Very strange that a bug would show up after so long - if it were the CPU going that would make more sense, but why would the motherboard start acting up after so long?
