Strange crashing issue

Hi All

I have a strange crashing issue that isnt the end of the world for me as its very specific to very few games.

I always happens in BFBC2. Basically after anywhere from 10 mins to an hour the game will lock in place. The graphics will turn to lots of small squares and then after a little longer the screen goes a solid grey normally. In almost all cases i have to restart the machine.... i think once or maybe twice i did manage to get back to windows but its basically not possible. Once its heppened it will then always happen a lot quicker (10-20 mins)

This also was happening on deux ex human revolution when i tried it the other day. Normally after about 30 mins or so play. After fiddling around i turned off a few things (post processing, depth of field and something thats 4 letters... AASC or something) and I managed to play for about an hour.... but then I had to turn it off due to the wife lol. However it didn't crash in that time. But also I wasn't doing any action bits like when it was crashing, so im not 100% sure it solved the issue.

It has happened in other games but only very rarely. Once in global agenda when i accidently opened 2 instances of the game and it crashed as soon as i opened up once of them.

a couple of times on a few other games but nothing regular.

I has never happened on dead island... that runs flawlessly.

My system isnt the coolest. Graphics card runs at about 70 - 90 degrees (idle - load) and mother board is at 50-55. Everything else seems cool. I tried deux ex with graphic cards fan speed cranked up so it ran a lot cooler before changing the settings and it still crashed so i dont think its the cards heat.

i game only on 1680 x 1050 resolution.

My system is:

dual core e8400 CPU
Asus Silent Knight AL Socket 775 / AM2 / 754 / 939 / 940 Pure Aluminium Processor Cooler
4 gig ddr2 ram
ATI 4870 (512)
Enermax Liberty 500W PSU
Asus P5Q P45 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

I dont play BFBC2 anymore as I just went and got it on xbox in the end but it would be nice to try and fix this issue at somepoint as i prob wont be buying a new system for a little while yet (6-12 months at least i hope) so any help would be great

thanks in advance.

how are you monitoring the temps ?

maybe try downloading core temp and gpuz, set gpuz to output to a log file and check that after the system resets.

anything in the event log ?

I just used catalyst control center for the card and asus probe for the rest.

Il look into what you suggest when i have time.

Does it sound like a heat issue?

the squares described in BFBC2 initially sounds like the gfx card memory over heating/failing.

try loading up the games with the lowest graphics settings you can (800x600 all set to low etc) and see if that makes any difference, hoping that it will put less stress on the card.

i remember ages ago trying that. Stuck everything on low and it still crashed. Bit odd really as other stuff doesn't have that issue.

Could it be games that are also CPU intensive... i know BFBC2 is one of the few that is.

its a possibility, but being as it runs ok temp wise seems unlikely.

have you tried running memtest on your memory ?

nope. been a long time since i have had to play around with my PC so il try that when i get the time... might not be for a couple of days till I get the chance.

Is that just a program i download and run or something else?
