Strange cut out +restart during gaming

Having random cut outs on my pc whilst gaming. Whilst gaming pc just totally cuts off, and pc restarts itself.

I've recently modded the top lid by dremmel-ing out 3 x 14cm holes (1 for cpu intake and 2 for gpu intake).
I've monitored temps on screen with afterburner and cpu and gpu temps look to be much better (cpu barely goes over 60c now where would hit 80 before, and gpu also dropped a good 10-15c), and the front and sides now generally feel pretty cool to the touch (I was simply running with the lid off before, no issues despite it being like an oven).
However I'm unsure if maybe some part of the mobo has some kind of hot-spot that could cause it to cut out?

The psu also feels cooler to touch, however I did change it around to help exhaust heat from the case.

Have had about 20-30 hours with no shut downs since the mod, but since it started it cuts outs they happen once every 30-60mins.

-since doing the mod, I often get a message saying my sound card has the power cable disconnected. The cable was damn hard to get out and think I may have pulled the connector off a little but sound always works despite the message.
-Does this with gpu oc on or off.
-Three of the fans are on one mobo header (2 x arctic p14 and a coolink swif2 12cm).
-the gpu is suspended in the air (cable ties) and is horizontal in my case (fractal node 605) with a phanteks premium pcie riser cable.

Where would you guys start fault testing and how? I can only see temps on hw monitor and whilst gaming just cpu and gpu on afterburner.

Whats you gpu and cpu usage when gaming and is it all games or just one ?

I would check memory with memtest.

What psu are you using ?

Yep just with gaming (so far, only started doing this whilst gaming though, haven't tried again after the 4th time I restarted as don't wanna do any damage).

I think it might be that dodgy sound card connection. It was really difficult to get the cable off and looks a bit bent. Maybe that's shorting out the psu or something?

Psu is an evga 850w p2 platinum... Like 220 quids worth of psu it had best not be that.

I did notice when I put the pc back together, popped the power cord in it sparked. Stupid me left the switch on. However has ran fine for about 30-40 hours before issue started.

I am also dubious about temps though... Gpu and cpu getting cool fresh air in but they're dumping all the hot air directly into case. I would have thought though with 5 exhaust fans (6 including psu fan) should be plenty enough to exhaust any heat. And 3 x 14cm intakes should push out most hot air anyway.

Sound card is right next to the gpu, perhaps getting blasted by hot air but then it was before I modded anyway (had the riser cable on for about a year)

Any way I can check temps inside my psu? I'm guessing sticking a metal thermometer in there is a bad idea. Feels relatively cool to touch.

The game I'm playing (state of decay 2) is barely at 50% usage and gpu between 60-90%

when you carried out the mod to the case did you remove all components from the case, plus all the io cables too, did you deep clean the case to remove all metal fillings too, even if the smallest ones are still in it the motion of moving the case may have moved them on to critical components which may be causing shorts.

i'd pull the whole pc appart and check each component carefully and cleaning in the process, just to rule out small metal peaces from the mod

Try removing the sound card and see if the issue persists.
Good shout and the obvious thing for fault testing I'm kicking myself of not trying first :D

Will try later after unplugging. Need my sound card though and short on cash... My sound card asus xonar dx supports dolby digital live which I've found works wonders connecting to my hifi, looking at new ones though I can't see this feature listed on them... Anyone here can recommend a good sound card for connection to a 5.1 hifi?

I've just got a soldering iron so gonna try solder the power connection on the sound card on... My soldering skills aren't great though... I'm wondering if that might be a bit too risky. Don't wanna damage anything.

Yeah was worried about this. Its just the lid that I modded, separately (was cutting outside). After cutting I sanded down with some emery paper, felt pretty smooth, then washed it down with soap.

The edges of the cpu hole have been covered with a car window seal rubber and the fan holes have the fans below the cut outs but guess it'd possible something could have come off. I wonder if that's what made psu spark when I plugged it in... If you leave the switch to on, and plug in psu power cable is it normal for it to do that?

Certainly no big bits of metal in there but could be particles. Would they be enough to cause a short? Don't have any canned air left now after cleaning, any ideas of how best to clean mobo etc? Vacuum is a good or bad idea?

Hi,

Look In the graphics card thread (and search Reddit), but looks as if there is an issue with some EVGA power supplies and 3080s/3090s.

Seems the cards draw power so fast the PSU thinks it's a surge and surge protection kicks in.

I'm not saying it's definitely that, but you might want to look into it.

definatly look at canned air, as a vacuum cleaner can produce static which if it builds up enough can kill components, do you have a program installed called hwinfo 64?, its a good place to start as it will show everything about your pc, if anything flags up in red then you should have a pretty good idea what may be wrong before a shutoff.

regarding the psu when you say "spark" do you mean when you plugged in the power coard and you hear a cracking sound? or actual spark from the psu its self, if its the first one thats normal as you've unplugged and left the psu swich on at the back of the unit, its always best to swich off the psu too that way you avoid that cracking sound when you plug back in, if the spark came from directly inside the psu then you've got problems and at this point buy a new psu as something is very wrong with the unit you have, just hope that it hasnt damaged anything else at this point.

I had very similar issues with the Mrs pc. I finally figured it was too much ampage on the USB bus. It was a USB powered light that kept drawing to many amps.
