Strange decisions at work

We had a new citrix installed for remote access at work and they put the profiles on the wrong server and then they moved the profiles to another server once 50 users had logged in and this broke the my documents redirect. So i suggested renaming all the profiles so that they can be auto created like new users are. But they instead said that they want IT to send an email to all 50 users requesting their passwords so that IT can log in and fix the profiles.

I was not sure which section to post this in, because i was initially going to ask for technical advice on fixing the profiles. But i just wanted to see comments on the ridiculous suggestion of requesting all users password via email, over asking them to log out and back in. Do you think that is going too far to please the customers? I have worked in some places and the IT department policies can be quiet strict and the user base listens to them. Where i work now you can't even ask users to log off before they go home, no one listens.

Anyone else have people at work make the strangest of decisions and you can't do anything about it?

Urgh, Citrix. You know, with a properly made OS you could probably run the client as a standalone PC and it would be just as good for what most people use it for. Most of the one's i've seen are something like a 1.5GHz VIA chip and 512-1GB RAM.

renaming the profiles would surley be the much easier option, no? seems like there going the really long way round for no reason!

aside from the obvious security issues this just sounds like you have a citrix admin with no experience.

Good IT should not need to know passwords, and good users should not give up their passwords. IMHO, you should fix it from the back end.

If I was a user on that network I would not be giving out my password. They should think again and do it properly and I'd be looking at the change control documentation.

Exactly. They just can't comprehend how every user emailing their password to IT is worse than asking them to just log out and back in.

*slams head on keyboard*

But security where I work is a joke, the guys in IT where I work won't allow me to change the sysadmin password "in case something happens", it has not been changed in years. They also store every password from the building in a spreadsheet with a weak password. Every pc has local admin for domain users and all the servers have the same local admin password. ridiculous.

Last company I worked for they wanted my password. Told them bluntley NO!!!.

They could reset it if they felt they needed access to my user that badly.

Do you work in a school?

Law firm. hahaha

The guy i work with is retarded, he tells users that we can speed up pcs by defragging them, they are on old p4 1.8 with ddr1 ram. I said that it is not going to make a difference. As i work the later shift, he says i will take a look and "speed it up". End up having to swap it out and as we didn't have an image for the one pc, i said he should build it from scratch. He doesnt get round to it, so i end up doing it. I swap the pc out and it is running way better than the other one. hes comes in, in the morning and the user says that a printer is not added. Turns out he completely breaks the pc, has to make a new outlook profile, wtf, then he ends up putting the old pc back cause he doesn't know how to fix a few things on the new one. So it was a total waste of my time, time for me to find a new job. How do such incompetent people get jobs when there are so many people capable looking for work i will never know? /rant

Yes I know it's groen, but...

Why the **** would IT be asking them for passwords? If they have to login to the endusers accounts (which is LOLworthy anyway) they should be reseting the passwords themselves!

I think you're right, isn't this your second thread complaining about where you work recently?

Third by my count.

Also, anyone who does email their password should be penalised and brought up to speed with the IT policy

As said just leave already! What with the threads lately, and the one a while ago about no change in pay for 5 years was it?

Taking you for a mug, leave asap!
