Strange driver (?) issue with 4850 install

As per title issue really. Took delivery of 2 x 4850's recently and installed with CCC on disc. When trying to rum any of games I get the quick flash of black screen as if the game is about to load up but then it reverts to desk top but with the game bar in the tool bar!

Tried using driver cleaner in safe mode and within windows to get rid of all previous Nvidia and ATI drivers and the 'clean' install still yields the above result.

Tried also installing the 4850 'hotfix' but this also produces a strange result in that I then do not get an ATI icon in my tool bar and therefore don't have access the the CCC to enable Crossfire etc.

At my wits end here trying to sort this out and only going around in circles, yielding the same results everytime I uninstall and re-install. Will be reverting to my trusty 8800 GTX soon unless you guys can offer a solution. This all seems buggy as hell to me

Any advice appreciated ;)

Some people have been finding it hard to get rid of all the nv files which have been causing conflicts with the ati drivers. Make sure you have got rid of all nv files may solve the matter.

Specs:

Asus Maximus Formula x38
Q6600 @ 3.2
4 gig Reaper PC8000 DDR2
2 X 4850's
Enermax Liberty 650 Watt modular PSU
Windows XP Pro
Samsung F1 750 gig HDD
ETC ETC

How does one get into safe mode please. Got there by chance the other day and run driver sweeper but can't recall which button to press to enter - DOH!

Strange thing is, whilst the Crossfire install has been buggy from the go, it has worked occasionally but only randomly will allow me to play my games. When I first installed the hotfix, the ATI icon went into the desk top tool bar but ever since it hasn't and I cannot access the CCC - it will not respond through Start - All Programmes - Catalyst Control Centre.

It's doing my swede in!!!

Thanks for your interest guys

Also, should I use 1 or 2 bridges for Crossfire at my native res of 1680 x 1050.
Using one at the mo and when it briefly worked, got great results in COD4 and a couple of others - Crysis excluded where I got no gains at all!

Repeatedly tapping F8 only takes me to a boot option menu where floppy, DVD Rom and HDD are listed. I must be having a really bad day :(

F5 worked a treat thanks.

Used driver cleaner in safe mode to take out ll ATI and Nvidia entries under admin and my account and still same problem.

Gone down to single card and reinstalled driver and still same issue

For example: COD4 boots up to menu screen; select single player and the screen goes black as if loading and then reverts to desktop whilst minimising to toolbar. Interestingly, the sound for the intro movie is still coming through!

Thoroughly Pi _ _ ed off now. Don't see what else can be done. Not enjoying the ATI 4850 experience at all so far

Some of those NV files are being reinstalled automatically for me under XP as they are part of the SP3.cab file not found anyway to remove those as they keep coming back. Not bothered as under Vista it is easy to remove them all.

I had this issue with the HD2900XT i had a year ago. I never really resolved it, and it was much improved with a windows reinstall (was under XP), but it still reared its ugly head now and again. The solution for me was to get a 8800GTS 512mb!!! Really strange and REALLY annoying. All is well with my HD4850 though.

OK, I seem to have stubbled on a solution for this should anyone else experience a similar problem. Still don't know what the problem is or what a proper fix would be but here goes:

You have to set your desk top resolution (including refresh rate) to match that set in game. ie I have Crysis running at 1680 x 1050 and 60 hz refresh rate. If my desktop is set to 1280 x 1024 the game will crash to the minimised bar within the toolbar. If I set the desktop to 1680 x 1050 it will run as ususal. Hope that clear ;)

Not ideal and I would welcome a proper fix from someone if they know what causes this, but it's a work around at least!

Anyone come across similar problems?

Anybody have a solution for this please.

Games will only run if I set the desktop res and refresh rate to the same settings as per the game. Otherwise, the initial stated problem occurs.

Never come across this before. Tried all latest drivers including beta 8.7 and same result - despite running driver sweeper in safe mode.

Thanks for any interest

sounds like when its resizing from desktop to the game (due to different res)its conflicting somewhere.i do get a bit of a black screen but its a blink of a eye in length .then the game starts, but i do have different res on desktop than what i game at.
