Hi

Last night I picked up the phone to make a call and had no dial tone, plugged the phone into the master socket and found the same.

When i tried to call the house from my mobile I get a "the number you have dialled is not recognised message"

Ran the line test on the BT website and it told me the fault is probably at the exchange, possible repair by friday

Just wondering if any of the engineer guys have an idea as to what might be up?
Im obviously surprised the phone line is down but Infinity is ok, but hey no solar panel salesmen calls today :D

Im just dreading that my internet follows suit and dies

Don't forget the path your internet takes is quite different from your telephone line when you are connected by FTTC. The telephone signal still runs down the old copper back to the exchange whereas your internet flies down the fibre once it leaves the cabinet DSLAM.

During the short time I worked in phone and broadband technical support the fault with these usually lies at the exchange. I forget what they called it. It's like they've routed your line to a different location on the exchange, a crossed line if you like. I saw similar ones get fixed within minutes.

Ah thanks, makes sense now. Due to the recorded message im pretty sure it is exchange end. As you say as long as im good to the cabinet then the internet should be fine

Probably "Dis one leg" or faulty LIC/CONCH.

xDSL only needs one leg of the pair to work so it often surprises people when they've got no dial at all but the internet still works.
