Strange Fiesta MK6 problems

I have a 2007 Fiesta MK6 and over the past couple of weeks I have been experiencing a couple of strange problems.

When I'm driving in fifth gear I can hear a load high pitched whine noise and the faster I go it gets even more higher pitched but quieter. If I take my foot off the accelerator the noise stops completely.

When I'm driving at high speed and then slow right down for example on a slip road I can hear a loud metal rattling noise coming from under the car. This rattling noise seems to disappear once I've been driving at a constant speed for a minute or so and it only seems to happen when theres a big downward change in speed.

I'm thinking it might be a bad exhaust or bearings. Thanks for any help :)

mine is doing the same with the high pitched whine, what engine is it it? maybe the PAS pump on the way out or low/poor fluid. I'm not sure if PAS pump failures are just a 2litre engine issue or if they put the pump in the same place on the smaller engines. Test this by turning wheel lock to lock and you may hear the same whine then, or maybe like a air(very small bubbles) sucking noise.

Other than that it could be a gearbox/diff bearing, which is sometimes audible (but no way loud) for me until the oil is up to temp. Might be worth getting the oil level topped up?

The rattle is probably the center exhaust mount (just under the handbrake basically), broken by speed bumps or pot holes, its fine while the engine speed is stable, but any engine movement (be it accelerating or engine braking) will cause it to move about. Mine broke the night before a track day, i wasn't impressed trying to find a garage in the morning before rushing 100miles to snetterton lol. Although mine was broken by the heavy aftermarket exhaust, the standard one shouldn't have broke it.

i doubt pas whine would vary on and off throttle. GF's fester had really noisy PAS a couple years ago. i drained and put new PAS fluid in, tip top ever since. its an 05 car

i was out the other weekend, one guy had an ST fester, after a bit of a thrash he had to pull over and throth was pouring out the PAS fluid bottle.

i got the impression the pump was pulling air in etc.

yeh the pump is mounted to the block and as standard theres no cooling for the PAS fluid. It boils over, but it also means you end up with loads of air in there. The car was supposed to come with a cooled PAS pipe in the lower grill as theres holes for them. Ive got one fitted and it still overheats on track days, although never on the road anymore.

pretty hard (we were being tracksuit wearing chavs on an industrial estate), so he had been driving "fast" but in a straight line. turned around at the other end, came back (quickly) and could bearly steer at the end (no pas)

probaly is, with all that throth (air in the system) the pump will not be lubricated properly, hence youd see the pump fail.

I'd get an old bit of carpet and get under the car and check all the heatshields are in place and the fixings have not moved/corroded.

oh yeah, as for the whine on and off throttle, typically thall be gearbox or diff related.

does it make the same noise if youre foots on the clutch?

Yeah it doesn't make the whine noise when I put my foot on the clutch.

I checked my engine oil yesterday and I noticed the level was at the minimum marker so I'm gonna top it up with some Semi Synthetic 5w/30 today.

Could very well be diff bearings.
Is the noise coming in at a certain speed have you noticed?
If it is as soon as its in fifth then it could be 5th gear bearing.

Took the car to a transmission garage today and they comfirmed that the problems are from the gearbox. They told me the gearbox oil leaked out which then caused all the damage to the gearbox, so I will need a replacement :(

They quoted me £700 for a replacement gearbox, oil, labour and 12 months warranty is that reasonable?
