Strange GPU problem - Sapphire 4870x2

Hi, I bought a 4870x2 a year ago and have not had any problems until recently. Every time I try playing a game of Modern Warfare 2 online, and join a game, the timer starts (i.e match starting in 10...9...8...7 etc) but whenever the timer gets to about 5... my screen freezes. I can still hear the time ticking down in the background, but the screen is frozen. Then, the screen goes black. The second the screen goes black the GPU fans go crazy blowing out air, and my monitor says "no signal detected" - If I restart my gpu seems to be working fine again, but I still get the same problem.

Also, I've just remembered I was playing Assasin's creed 2 the other day and the game just randomly closed for no reason (although the screen didn't go black)... don't know whether this is related to the problem

any idea how to fix this issue? thanks

Both gpu's ? I'd say that's a little higher than I'd like though it is a card capable of 'managing' with those temps. Have the temps risen over a period of time ? Or have they always been similar to this ? :)

no idea lol, this is the first time i've ever checked them :D I'll try updating drivers and removing any dust.. hopefully that should work

When I first bought mine the hotter gpu (naturally the second one - furthest away from the fan) idled at around 45 - 50 C with a fan speed set at about 30% ish. As time went on I noticed the temps would rise and rise. Turned out a darn good clean was all it needed, temps have dropped right back down again. I can even run the fan on a slightly lower speed to get the same temps though I can't work that one out ?!? :D

right now (at idle) CPUID says it's 73C... is that normal?

No, it's not. Mine idles with ~50 on one core, and ~40 on the other.

Either reseat and clean the sinks, or run the fan on 100% for half an hour to clean out any dust.

Ok small problem, I reinstalled the drivers and everything worked fine (for a few days) - then I started getting the problem again. Start modern warfare 2, one second in it would freeze, then reboot - sometimes giving a blue screen.

I ran the fans 100% for 10 minutes, reinstalled the drivers, reseated, but still got the problem. Did that again and ran the furmark benchmark. After about 5 seconds it froze and computer rebooted (temp was 83C)

now, whenever I get to the starting windows screen, this screen comes up (rather then the enter password screen)

I have turned the comp off to cool down... is opening up the gpu and cleaning it the only option?

What temps does the CCC report?

My 4870x2 is currently sat at 83˚C and 62˚C idle, with the fan at 27%.

The card is dust free and I don't have any gaming troubles or any system problems (touch wood). So, in short, high temps don't always mean a buggered card.

It's definitely gfx card related though, maybe you've got a PSU problem, what's the rest of your spec? What gfx drivers are you using?

thanks for replying - not too sure about temps, as when I boot I can only get to that blue screen :( But I checked it today and the last few days... it's 80C with the fan on automatic, rest of spec is

I7 920 @ 3.4ghz
6gb ddr3
p6t deluxe v2
thermaltake toughpower 750w
antec 902

never had any problems before..

Ok so an update:

Now, whenever I turn on, I screen stays black for about 1 minute (normally, the Asus p6t deluxe v2 logo comes up after 2 seconds) - the asus logo does come up after about 1 min 10, but it's hard to read.. theres 'bits' all over the screen.. kinda hard to explain. Similarly, with the screens that follow, there's bits all over those too. I tried to get a picture, but now when i turn on, the screen just stays black for ages.. can't even see the logo come up.

note by 'bits' i mean something like this

not my picture, but what i'm experiencing is similar - is the gpu dead? If yes, is there any new gpu you could recommend? (I don't have the time to open it up to fix right now(if it's fixable that way), too much work, but could do that in a few weeks - would rather just buy a new gpu now, IF THAT'S NEEDED!)

thanks

Contacted the retailer, they said they'll take a look at it. In the mean time, will this work ok as a temporary gpu? (don't need for gaming, just web browsing)

will it go in the same slot as the 4870x2?
