Strange hangs in W7

This week I rebuilt my PC into the Corsair 650D case. Last night I deleted one too many system files, and killed XP. Oh well, I was ready to install W7 anyway, so I went ahead to backup my data.

I used a USB disk with Macrium Reflect to do image all my harddrives, so all my data wouldn't be at risk. While detecting plug and play devices it took a long time before proceeding - maybe 2-3 minutes. Last week before my build, this never occurred.

So I unplugged all optical and hard drives - still hanging. Unplugged all USB devices and front ports, except keyboard the keyboard and mouse. It still hangs. Tried another USB drive with the same result.

Same thing with Windows - W7 logo appears, I need to wait 2-3 minutes before choosing the regional settings. Setup is starting screen shows for another 2-3 minutes.

Can anyobdy else tell me where to go from here? I'm at my wits end here. :(

unplug all your hard drives

sounds like one of them could be on the brink (or one of your sata cables)

try it with just the one drive plugged in when doing the setup

That's what gets me - I even tried with no drives connected at all, except the USB drive with the same result.

Windows 7 seems to be running just fine now, and currently installing updates as I speak.

I have sussed out exactly why my machine is hanging now. Before the build I had a floppy drive, but I took it out - I forgot to disable the drive and controller in the BIOS though. :o:o
