I recently had a request from a friend to re-install windows etc onto his computer as it was full of rubbish. I did so, wich is obviously very easy, the problem came when getting the sound drivers, now i wasnt sure what sound card he had, i was 90% sure it was an on board AC97, and it was, im also 95% sure after bodging around on his PC that its a Realtek made chip.

Easy I thought 2mins later i had the driver and was installing away, when...

.........RESET!!!!

His computer had reset!

Now before everone starts going on about temps etc etc this PC is NOT overheating! Its a 2.4GHz celeron, from a major manufacturer. Its been stable at least a year and run games etc, and i doubt the owner would have even heard of overclocking let alone overclocked it! Plus it only ever crashes when installing the Realtek drivers, which i have tried at least 5 times to do.

On my search around thre internet for various AC97 drivers, I found someone else with the same install/reset problem, but it had a dead link:(

Im not sure of the exact motherboard, but i know its a Gigabyte and it has an Sis-651 chipset.

Thanks in advance for any help, I really need to get this sorted, does anyone have a work around?

I think in this case you are going to need to know the motherboard model number. It should be printed on the Mobo itself I know that the standard AC97 drivers arent particularily stable anyway. You could also try disabling the chip in the bios and checking to see if it still does reset.

as above, try disabling the the onboard sound in the bios.

If its a major manufacturer then you could probably go to their website and get the drivers for all the devices on that machine simply from the model number ie. Dell Dimension 3100 or whatever

Also as above you should find the Mobo model printed on the board, then on the gigabyte website you can download the drivers. i think infact if memory serves you can go to gigabytes website and there is an auto detect mobo and download appropriate drivers

Yeah, I just went to the packad bell site and found the drivers all working now. damn i wish i had more common sense......;)

annoying thing is that the AC97 chip is the same as any other (i checked) and the drivers didnt work meh
