Strange internet problem

I've been having a strange problem with using the internet. If I leave the computer running for a few hours, it will seem to suddenly stop letting me use the internet, and it won't even connect to AVG to do an update. However, I have some real time trading charts running on the computer at the same time which are obviously using the internet connection and they are working no problem, so I know the connection is fine.

I am also using a laptop on the same connection, and that has also run the charts at the same time in the past with no similar problems.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

Thank you.

what exactly happens when you try and access the internet when it has stopped working mate??

I just get the usual 'page cannot be displayed' message on a white screen as if I have no connection. But I know I have a connection because my charts are running (connected live to the exchange), and my other computer using the same connection is working fine.

It's an ADSL always on connection.

Could be your DNS going balls up ?

next time it happens open a command prompt (START > RUN > cmd > OK) and type:

ping www.google.com

you will either get "request timed out" or "reply from..."

If the former then try typing:

ping 66.249.85.104

And see which you get.

If the first one times out, but the second one works, then it is your DNS that is going screwey.

Everything seemed to start working OK after I originally posted this, but now it's playing up again.

I did the test that The Kid suggested above. The Google site didn't work but the other one did, so my DNS is screwed. But what do I do to fix it?

Thanks.
