Hi, Got myself a new Netgear router DG834N and since I got it iv had quite a few problems with my internet connection. When i load up a page often i get 'no internet connection' warnings and when i refresh the page a few times it eventually appears ok. This has happened an awful lot this past week so I had another look at my router configuration. Everything seems fine but I am not sure which encapsulation method I should be using. The options are PPPoE or PPPoA. Also I have to choose a multiplexing method of VC based or LLC based and specify VPI and VCI settings for these. Anyone know if these settings being wrong would cause me problems like those that I have been having? The only other option I see is an MTU size under the WAN config but I dont think this has anything to do with my problems. My ISP is onetel so if anyone has settings for their services it would be appreciated! Cheers

Hi jonnyc

I have installed a couple of those without any problem so perhaps you just might have a problem unit. Have you got the latest firmware ?

I agree with your comment about MTU.

I don't know the settings for you ISP. I use Demon Business at the office but it's all standard stuff :

VPI = 0
VCI = 38
PPPoA
CHAP
VC/MUX
G.DMT

I would have thought that the Netgear would be able to auto detect a lot of the settings anyway. Try a reset to factory maybe ?

Good luck

Hi thanks for your help. I had the router set to PPPoE as the little info panel said that it was the most popular type of encapsulation. I am using the VC multiplexing and the other settings are the same. I dont have any options to select CHAP or G.DMT (is this handshake protocol or something?). The only other problem could be just due to the latest firmware on my MacBook Pro as I have read of a number of problems recently regarding the latest updates although they only affected wireless internet AFAIK. Thanks again for your help and I will report back if things start working better! And yes I do have the latest firmware installed.

Edit: There is another setting I wanted some help on. under LAN config I have options for RIP direction and versions. Should RIP (routing info packets) be enabled and if so should it be bi-directional? Also should I be using RIP version 1 or version 2? thanks.

hi, still having the same problems having tried all the above combinations of settings on my router. If I type in an address it sometimes will work straight away but a lot of the time it flashes up as site not found or server offline. If i keep refreshing about 10 times it will eventually load. It is as if the router if losing the connection and ten secs later it comes back online. I am totally baffled by it. Anyone got any suggestions?
