Strange internet problems...

In my parents house, we usually get a decent 2.7 mb/s connection. Now ever since last Tuesday there have been loads of disconnections and the speed has dropped to 1mb/s. This has never happened before ever since we've joined o2 2 years ago .

So we called up o2 on Saturday to see what was wrong, and told us to disconnect everything and plug in the router to the master socket (router is usually plugged into my bedroom on an extension phoneline). Speed was still slow. Then they told us to call up BT to check the line as apparantly they could hear interferance on their side, so we did that but BT says the line is fine. We then called up o2 again and they told us they'll do some tests and call us back on Monday. They never did call back, so we're going to call them tomorrow morning.

I decided to see what would happen if I plugged the router back in my room, and the speed dropped to a further 300 kb/s  Interference could also be heard on the phones now. So I plugged it back into the master socket, and speeds shot to around 1.2 mb/s and the interference disappeared, but the internet speed is still a lot slower than usual. Disconnections have also seemed to have stopped for now.

Does anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong? It's annoying having internet this slow, and with 4 users in the house, it gets very annoying :p.

I had a feeling it was that, but I was in my uni accom when the problem started. Should I just wait for a few days and see if the speed crawls back up?

EDIT: Do you have any ideas why it might've start disconnecting randomly? Seems strange as it was stable on 2.7 for 2 whole years without a single disconnection at all, apart from the odd router update every now and then :p.
