I've got a strange iPad Air 1 charging issue going on:

If I plug the charging cable into the iPad with the iPad switched ON, it doesnt charge.. No lightning bolt, and no charge going into it if left for a while..

If I switch the iPad OFF (and leave it off), with the cable connected it will charge, but at what seems the be the reduced 1w (ish) speed (same as from USB port on laptop, or iphone charger), as it takes a good 15+ hours to charge to 100%..

Other than this the iPad seems to function just fine..

Any idea what could be wrong? I have tried a number of different chargers/cables, and the above functionality appears to happen every time.

What chargers are you using? This is the behaviour I'd expect when trying to charge an iPad with a phone charger as they can't deliver enough current to both charge the device and power it at the same time.

Not get any little dust balls in the charging port? I see this often with the users ipads / phones at work. Always use a paperclip to clear it out :)

Nope, no dust, already cleaned the port. It is not showing up in iTunes either, even if I press power+home to perform a reset.

Try it with a higher watt USB charger - bet you it works, seen this on other apples devices lately, phones, Apple Watch even - won't charge until a more powerful plug was used, must be something to do with aging batteries and needing more ompph.

try using a computer USB port or standard genuine iphone charger to charge the iPad. Not ipad charger.

i had one come in for repair, charging works on computer and iphone charger but not on ipad charger.

It was Tristar issue, i''ve replaced this chip and now works fine.

also try hardware reset for few times.
while on home screen, press and hold, power+home button until reboot. this will reset power management, just like PRAM reset on a mac.

done all above, still not charging correctly.. I have established it will charge at a slow speed when powered off.. If switched on (but screen off) it will charge somehow (as an example, it charged from 82 to 90 over night, if it had been OFF it I believe it would have done to 100%)..

So its starting to look like there is a hardware (controller/port error/chip) problem.. so might have to learn to live with it.. Its not a big deal, as I am planning to put it to use in the kitchen, just need to find a under cupboard pull down mount for it first. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions.
