Strange IPhone4 Signal

I finally got a replacement phone on monday after the first one was faulty.

I was working at a site yesterday where the signal isn't good, it will change between 'no service' & minimum signal. Yesterday when the IP4 was displaying the 'O2-UK' at the top there were no bars to go with it just the little lines at the bottom, I couldn't receive/make calls/sms but I could receive emails?

Also when I left the place the bars never returned and I had to restart the phone to get it to work again.

I never had this problem at this site with my old 3G, is this just the IP4 and I have to live with it?

Had this 2 or 3 times, especially when I come out of the Underground.

It's as if it just forgets to check for the signal again and never tries again.

Likewise, only way to restore it is to restart (and even then, it takes a good 2 or 3 minutes for the bars to appear).

Don't know how to resolve it, but I don't think it's an isolated incident.

I get similar issues occasionally with my 3G. After leaving an area with no signal, the phone seems to take ages to detect the signal again. Not sure if it's related, but when I go abroad, the phone also takes much longer than other phones to pick up the new network. I've also noticed that having no signal drains the battery really quickly.

I think it just reflects the fact that Apple is new to the mobile phone market. Compared to companies like Nokia and (Sony)Ericsson, who've been doing this for decades, Apple has minimal experience in designing antennas and writing baseband software - and it shows.
