This started happening a few weeks ago, it only happens sometimes but I'm a bit baffled...

1. Shut down PC with power button.
2. 5 minutes later the PC switches itself back on.
3. Shut down PC with power button.
4. Immediately PC switches itself back on.
5. Shut down PC with power button.
6. PC Stays off.

As I said it doesn't happen all the time but when it does happen it's the exact same scenario. It doesn't switch itself on at any other time.

1. Switch off with power button.
2. Unplug it from the wall.
3. Voila. If he switches back on he is either Houdini or you have a ghost problem ( or both ) :D

Another option.
Any chance you might have spilled some wine on your PC?
I think it was prooven in another movie that it may some weird effects on your pc.
My advice is, next time it does that, wait and see what it does next.
If it starts composing music, singing etc it is the wine :D

On a serious note: I think I've had this with one of my machines for a whiles and major hint was to check all power cables.

It's a newish build place so I can't imagine there would be any ghosts about and I can't think of anyone that could be haunting me.

I haven't checked any bios settings but not sure what setting it could be as it doesn't happen all the time.

I'll check my cables tonight. My first thought and still my leading theory is that it is the "switch on after power failure" option. So probably something to do with wiring I guess.

You mentioned shutting down via the on/off button.

What happens if you do a shut down from the OS?
(Windows? 7, 8?)

I'd be inclined to check the bios settings and look for any "Wake-on ****" features.

Also, as above, does this occur if you use the shutdown option in windows, as oppose to just pressing the button on the case(as it could be related to the switch on the case).

Is it an Asus mobo Skyfall?
Are you sure you have the power button set to sleep and not shut down by accident?
There is a BIOS setting that also causes this behaviour you are describing with Asus motherboards.
More info on hardware needed.

Other tings to check, again in the bios is wake on keyboard or mouse functions. As I have had this before with a sticking space bar that was set to wake the machine up.
