Strange lag spikes

New pc (titan prism with a 5830 and a network card) and got it all sorted but the internet browsing is bugging me a lot. Every 15-20 seconds I get a lag spike which lasts from 1 second to about 5. Its going to be a problem with gaming and internet searching is mind numbingly frustrating. Also occasionally my connection drops all together.

I also use a laptop in the same room (further away from the router infact) and its never had either of these problems.

I am running windows 7 ultimate on the pc and XP on the laptop (wont upgrade it to windows 7 untill my pc is sorted!)

Any tips/ideas/help would be met with cookies and possibly milk.

Open Task Manager (right click on taskbar to get to it) and look on the Processes tab. Arrange the list by the CPU column which shows how much CPU usage each service/application is using and let us know which one is hogging it.

Nothings hogging the CPU power, not running anything. The task manager was using the most really that or chrome.

Could it be due to the network card being 802.11n and the network is g? But I thought it was back compatible anyway. I did read something about windows 7 searches for wireless networks every X seconds and I have some software to counter-act this but isnt making a difference.

Nope it should work fine on a G network. Tried latest drivers from the chipset manufacturers site?

When you are talking about pausing, does the page take a long time to load or does the PC pause itself?

its just the internet that pauses, the rest of the computer is crisp as a crisp thing in a very crisp place. I will double check i have the latest drivers but I am pretty sure they are up to date. I did move the PCI network card into another slot to see if that would help and hasnt done anything :(

Yes theres sometimes another 3 computers on the network, but 1 is my laptop which doesnt lag at all.

Having new problems now of not being able to connect at all! Connects but I have no internet access!

Getting bored of this now. Why cant stuff be simple :(

Can you run an ethernet lead to this pc temporarily, so then we can see if its a wireless issue or something else on the PC.

Well its been working fine since i got back from rugby training, so kind of unwilling to move the system down stairs to test out with it cabled etc. But I guess as long as its working happy days :D

Was probably something someone told me to do!

Given the fact that it's running wireless it's almost certainly going to be down to wireless polling assuming you have good signal strength.

Try using this utility: http://www.martin-majowski.de/wlanoptimizer/

(There are other ways of fixing it involving disabling WLAN service, netsh wlan etc but this is one of the easiest I have found)
