as of late my laptop had been running a little slow so i loaded cpu-z to check the settings...... the T5750 which should be running a 2.0ghz 166fsb*12.

But its running at 999mhz to 2000mhz constantly changing the multi anywhere from 6 to 12. ive checked it with many diferent cpu programmes all saying the same.

how is this possible?? is it a hardware fault? how to fix?

Is your laptop a Dell? My Dell D820 was having similar issues, with the processor being stuck at 1GHz even with 100% CPU usage. It turned out that I was using the wrong AC adapter; I had a 65W one, not the 90w that came with the laptop. I got hold of the correct one and it started running at the correct speed of 1.83GHz.

I know it's a long shot, but it's worth checking before you spend a lot of time troubleshooting.
