Strange Laptop Noise

Hi all,

My sister just sent me this video from uni of a noise that her laptop has randomly started making this evening - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM0qKmUymwo

She says the noise is constant no matter what she is doing on the laptop.

Any ideas what it may be? I was thinking HDD about to die?

Unless theres something in the optical drive then yes that sounds like a dying hard drive to me.

Sounds more like something is in the fan to me.

As above, ask her if there is a disc in the drive. My old laptop will no longer read discs and makes some strange noises if I put one in.

ask her if the laptop feels very sluggish, this is a good sign of a dying HDD.
if not, i would lean more towards something in the fan too.
an alternative is to remove the HDD and turn the PC on and see if the noise is still there

If it is the HDD, start backing up everything NOW.

When my laptop HDD started making noises, I started backing up immediately and the drive died part way through the backup.

At least you got something, I got given a laptop and decided to do a backup the following morning. Well lesson learned, should have stayed up and done it as next day drive was dead.
