Strange Line Stats

Just helping someone out with their internet connection. They're going to migrate, so was thinking about Max: the stats given by their Linksys WAG54Gv2 router sound so implausible that I doubt they're based on anything real:

Downstream Rate: 1152 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 288 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 0 db
Upstream Margin: 6 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 46
Upstream Line Attenuation: 23
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0

I'd find it unlikely that a line of 46dB attenuation would have a particularly low SNR... but even less likely that a line with a constant 0dB margin would've been completely stable for over a year.

Any opinions? Should I just junk them, go for Max and see what happens? Not got anything else to test the line with, unfortunately. No extension wiring present - just a filter with fax & dsl.

EDIT: Rebooted it a couple of times. It now varies between 0 and 2147483647 db. Not seen anything else!

I agree that those stats are highly suspect :) I don't see how it could stay connected with a downstream SNR margin of 0dB. Perhaps updating the router firmware would give more realistic figures?

That was my first thought - there has been no firmware update for this since release. The firmware's dated 2004, would you believe(!).

I messed about with cables and unplugging things after I posted, and it then failed to keep sync for more than about 10 seconds for a 10 min period. I turned it off for a few mins, and it's stabilised again now. No idea what the hell happened there!

I've persuaded them to go from Orange (Wanadoo) to IDNet. Given IDNet's incredible customer service, if it goes completely messed up, I should think we can get it back to Home1000 fairly promptly.

Sounds like a good plan :)

With an ISP with a clue, you could always ask them to get attenuation and SNR margin from Woosh. Would at least let you see if the modem's reporting back the same as it shows in the UI.

They got the regrade to ADSL Max today. Connection speed plummeted from 1152k to 352k. Joy.

Being completely unconvinced the line was that bad, and unconvinced the line would be stable at 0dB as reported... I swapped the router.

Now syncing at 7488k. Old router heading towards the bin fairly shortly.

Does the WAG54G even support DSL Max?
I was under the impression that the DSL Max enabled router was the WAG354G?

Max is nothing particularly special. Just bog standard ADSL - all routers should support it.

Bah. BRAS appears to have been jammed at ~300k due to the dodgy router. Didn't change after 75mins, didn't change after quite a few hours, in fact. I suppose 300k to 8128k is a hell of a jump!

What are they looking at, then? 3 days?
