Strange lock up problem

Hi chaps,

Just looking for a bit of advice on a problem that's recently started happening. My ageing PC (Specs in sig) has recently started to lock up randomly, it's not specific to playing games/heat or otherwise. It's pretty much at random but it does tend to happen once or twice a day.

I've done the following to try and diagnose it:
  • Ran IntelBurnTest for 12hours on the MAX setting.
  • Ran MSI Kombuster for 2hours to check GPU overclock.
  • Ran MemTest86+ for 5 passes.
  • Constantly monitored temps - CPU: Idle - 25-35c Load - 50-60c GPU: Idle - 40c Load - 75-80c Northbridge: Idle - 50c Load - 70c
  • Checked voltages with Speedfan/Everest and they seem stable and the 3.3v/5v/12v all are within the 10% deviation.
  • Tried completely stock settings (No CPU/RAM/GPU overclock)
  • Increased both the Northbridge and CPU voltages a couple of notches just incase of CPU degradation.
  • Installed/Clean installed Chipset/GPU drivers (Sound is handled by the GPU)

The lock up presents itself with a loop of the last sound played and the only way to rectify is to manually reboot the machine. All of the USB's stay powered but my Razer Naga does stop pulsating and Numlock/Capslock cannot be activated.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Pretty stumped now to be honest, I don't really have the cash to pay out for new hardware - Especially since I'm still very happy with my performance.

Cheers guys!

:EDIT: Forgot to mention I've also since fully reinstalled Windows 7 from scratch and the problem is still there.

I have this exact same problem myself, however mine doesn't need a reboot, mine lasts usually for about 2-3 seconds then it corrects itself and continues working as normal, also happens once or twice a day.

I heard people mention that it was Raeltek in lots of cases, but there's no sign of it on my system, besides I use a USB headset so it makes no sense.

It used to happen to me in-game but that problem corrected itself over time not known how by me though, now I have this.

I too would like to know a solution to this :confused:

I've disabled my onboard sound as I use the Nvidia GPU sound over HDMI. So I suppose it can't be related to that, I don't think this board uses Realtek anyway.

Mine has been left on overnight and it has crashed hours before I've seen it, doesn't recover from the lock up at all. Not sure if we are having the exact same issue.

Hoping someone else can chime in :)

I've done some more investigating and have tried reinstalling my current Java version (I seem to remember it's more often triggered when I'm running Java applications/Java enabled webpages). I'll see how it goes overnight tonight.

Another suggestion has been Windows 7 SP1 causing the hard lock up issue so that will be next on my list. I think before that I will try clean booting Windows (Disabling all services etc) and seeing if it crashes at any point overnight.

The overnight test seems the easiest way to induce the problem as it's almost guaranteed to crash when left on overnight.

MrElve - Care to list the things you have tried to fix it? Are you overclocked at all?

Another lock up just now, rules out issue with Java as nothing was running. Next step is to run it overnight with a clean boot. We'll see I guess...Any suggestions welcome!
