so my dads windows 7 PC developed some very odd behaviour, on start up, the password login field has a long string already typed, my first thought was the keyboard was broken with a wedged repeating key, so i rebooted with the keyboard unplugged, but it still occured, i tried the obvious things for windows, virus scan, sfc updates, but the problem is still there and ive gotta hold my hands up, im stumped, everything else works and its a minor annoyance for him, but has anyone ever seen this before and/or found a solution?

Haven't seen this before sorry. Have you tried booting up in safe mode? or even tried rolling the computer back to an earlier date?

This is a guess as I've never done it on Windows 7 but have a look in this part of the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

check to see if there's a string value called 'DefaultUserName' and if there is see what it's set to, if it matches what you're seeing, remove the entry or blank it.
