Strange mobo noise + temp

Hi all,

Don't know if anyone could help?

Have just put together a new system, GA-EX58-UD5 mobo, Intel i7 D0 stepping processor @3.8GHz (overclocked by OcUK), 6GB Patriot Viper RAM, XFX ATI 4890 GFX, Windows 7....

Brilliant system, but whenever i move the mouse wheel up and down in web browser or Word documents (IE8 - i know.. but havent got round to downloading ffox yet (p.s. although IE8 seems pretty sweet, maybe its having a processor thats ten times faster.., but anyway I digress):

I get a kind of grating sound coming from the case, sounds like its coming from around the RAM module area (which makes sense) and a bit worrying.... Anyone have any ideas? It was my first build, so bit worried might have put something in wrong place, and don't want to do any serious damage...

p.s. also CPU is running at 38C and system/northbridge at 48C, I know these are well within tolerance, am quite happy with CPU temp, but do you reckon northbridge is running a bit hot?

Many thanks,

Have you checked the clearance of the heatsink & fan from the ram modules?

From your description it sounds like when you move the mouse you cause the CPU temp to increase which in turn increases the CPU fan RPM. So the grating noise is either vibration or fan blades clipping the modules.

Well, have Noctua NH-U12P heaksink & fan (standard combo for this motherboard/setup) and fan isn't touching RAM (but is close)

The fan speed isnt really changing, the sound is instantaneous, and kind of clicks on and off very quickly (with v high frequency grating sound like something is being accessed quickly). I think its when accessing RAM (as scrolling through highly populated pages), but is a bit unsettling..:confused::(

Can you download cpu-z and check to see if speedstep is enabled, as I had noises coming from the CPU area and when I set the voltages to manual and disabled speedstep it stopped the noise.
