Strange mouse behaviour, what could be causing this?

My mouse (or more precisely, Windows) is frequently not responding when I left click - I have to click it again for anything to happen. Of course the prime suspect here is the mouse itself having developed a fault, and that is possible. But it was working perfectly yesterday, and now it is regularly not responding on the first click. But if I click again, with exactly the same amount of pressure, it works.

I noticed it in Firefox first, so I assumed a Firefox issue. But it does it in IE7 as well, and within Explorer. A reboot has not fixed it.

Is there anything software-wise within Windows or another application which might possibly be causing this odd behaviour? Or is it most probably the mouse itself which is buggered?

Ideas appreciated before I go mouse shopping :)

Come to think of it I have Linux installed on a dual boot (I haven't used it for so long I forgot about it) so I will try that later to see whether it's a hardware or software issue :)
