Strange NET speed issue.. advice?

I have come down to my parents house for the weekend and using there internet on my lptop, but i have noticed its really slow.. a lot slower than when i used to live here..

They got Telewest (now Virgin media) Cable 2MB
Netgear Wireles router

Now its got encrypion enabled etc, and there arnt any devices using the internet other than myself, but i can only get about 25 ~35 kBps from any site i try.. Even from Blueyonder gaming files which is usually Ultra fast.

I know its not my PC and i got 25mb Bebox at home which is blazing quick and my dads laptopis the same speed. But cant figure out why it would be so slow.

I hav mamanged to get a random boost (200 kBps) in speed on some sites at sometimes, but if i retry the same file later or the same site. Its back to being slow, plus the speed dosnt last long as even if the files starts fast it soon starts to plumit after a few mins.

Suggestions?

How are you connected to the router? Is it the same transferring files within the network? Tried with just the modem?

This is similar to my experience on 20Mb connection. They ran tests (remotley) on the connection and said nothing was wrong, so I now have an engineer coming out to check it.

But this behaviour of quite unexpected slowness, and seemingly eratic speed changes sounds very familiar. It makes trying to stream any media next to impossible. One particular problem for me is trying to work from home and using the connection for conferencing.

I think that for some of us Virgin customers, our broadband has really suffered lately.

Yeah mea prior to NTL and Telewest joining, Telewest used to deliver the best broadband aroundand was very reliable, now that Virgin have comealong it just seems to have gone "T**S" up.. shame

I'm in Solihull too (Elmdon). Where abouts are you? Possible we're on the same UBR?

Would be interested as I intend to give them some stick tomorrow (they reckon there is no problem with my connection...OK , so why is the 2Mb connection I use during the week faster then?)
