Hi all,

I got a brand new PC (via overclockers) now one PC (new) is Vista and the old one is a Windows XP SP2.

Heres the thing. I have a cable modem (not router) that is downstairs and i'm connecting it to the new PC via Ethernet upstairs. The old XP PC is now up on the 2nd level of the house with its network cable plugged into the new Vista PC. Now both PC's can see each other but one curious thing is the internet doesnt work if both are connected up BAR Ventrilo/Overclockers website and a few select websites (like my guilds one). Everything else no hope in hell for connecting.

Any ideas? i'm trying to avoid using a router (went down that line ones hated it) just seems Strange!

How are they connected?
You can have more than one machine attached to the modem, but you'd need to be running ICS - a router's a far better answer, and there's no good reason for you to hate it...

the new PC comes with 2 network ports. Now my old set up was the same as this one.

I had 1 PC hooked up to the cable modem (bare in mind this cable modem is quite old and Wired connection) and the other PC connected into that Pc via network port in effect I beleive the PC connected direct to the modem acted like a router :) well kinda. It worked fine till one PC moved to Vista (new one) and the old one moved and replaced another PC.

Router wise we tried that as it connected to the cable modem direct it kept disconnecting and was a waste of money so returned it (kept dropping connection) end result moved back to direct connection using one PC as a kinda of Hub :).

So what i'm wondering is a way around this issue I got from somewhere.

You'd need to set up ICS for the other machine to get connected to the internet.

The router didn't work because you bought a crappy one. It's far and away easier than messing about with ICS though...
