Oh Canada!
I have an HP XW6400 workstation that was recently gifted to me.

I am hearing a strange noise. Only happens inside of windows. Sort of sounds like the really old hard drives from the late 80s early 90s that were loud as hell. It seems to happen when I am loading something.

Machine is using a brand new WD Blue 1TB. The sound is coming from the motherboard (definitely) and NOT the drive.

Thoughts?

I will disconnect the speaker to see if that is the issue.

The sound is like a rattle or like someone scraping metal along wood beads... like an old loud hard drive. I cant explain it.

Somebody on another forum said to try a different drive (already did. No resolution) and a different SATA port which I am going to do now.

It will be a fan, nothing else is a moving part. Stop each one briefly to see which is the problem.

Even the GPU fan?

Motherboards are made of solid state components - nothing capable of making a noise bar coil wine. Not the noise you describe.
