...any knowledgable types here today?

On some of the older sliding door electric trains (Southern, Thameslink types) and on the old slam doors, sometimes the train would come to a halt and from beneath the floor came an ungodly din...

"wo..woo..woo...wuwuwuwuwuwuwuwuwuwuwuwwu"

Does anyone know what I mean? Does anyone know what it is (just to satisfy curiosity)?

Could it be:

1) A toilet emptying pump
2) Some kind of brake primer pump
3) A trapped wuwu monster...

Here's over to you..

3)

Something to do with the charging?

Edit: I know the sound you are talking about. Though i only ever heard it on the slam door trains (electric ones as well).

In Holland I remember being able to hear the PWM control as the train slowed to a stop, but I imagine since you say older trains they are not electric? It sounds kind of like that typical "electric noise" from films if there is a big spark.

probably rust eating away the last bit of supportive framework holding the carraige together tbh...

still running 25-30 year old trains down ere on a regular basis... those beasts make every noise under the sun...

Compressor. They have pneumatic brakes.

I think that man has it - thankyou! I did think it was something to do with the brakes, and trying to find an answer by googling "wowo noise train" doesn't really help :-)

That would be more more of an 'airy' sound, surely?

From what I can understand he's talking about an electrical motor style sound.

It'd be interesting to see what people interpreted that sound as being... anybody got microphones? ;)

Yeah, but the electrical motor inside the compressor is what he's hearing. Got to admit it sounds the most likely. Thought the noise would be more wwuwu..wu...wu.....wu.......wu as it slows down with more pressure but anyhow.

It sounds like a very slow pump of some kind. The "wuwuwu" noise can be accompanied by a rythmic thudding sound, combining to be more of a "wukka wukka wukka wukka".

Anybody who has been on the thameslink style electric slidy door trains must have heard this....or is it time for me to slow down a bit?

Merseyrail have the same type of train, and I always thought the wukka wukka wukka thing was to do with the heating.
