I recently moved a folder 219gig from one hard drive to another and everything was fine. No problem. But now it decides not to open. This on windows 8.1 64bit. I click the folder but it just gives that swirling icon forever. When I click the x to close it tells me not responding. I managed to copy it to another drive but same problem. I've checked the drive and no errors. I just don't know how it's became corrupt or what's happened? Any good utils I can use?

Would do but I've never dabbled with Linux for years. I know it's intact but it just will not open. All my albums on there too. Rest of folders on drive fine. Might have to try stellar pheonix wich I've used before to recover a formatted drive. This could only happen to me.

Can you access it via a CMD box? dir, copy etc.
When you copy it to another drive and drop down the details, do the numbers seem to add up, number of files etc and can you see file names as it does it?
On the copy can you take take/reset ownership of the root folder and all under it and reapply the permissions as well?
Linux live CDs are pretty easy these days, get something like Ubuntu, or if still put off by Linux try something like Hirens boot cd. In fact Hiren's should have plenty of drive checking tools, file explorers, copiers, data recovery tools on it.

My guess would be corrupted ownership, permissions or just some odd file it doesn't like. If you can, copying/moving chunks out of it via CMD or another file explorer might narrow down a dodgy file. Say by doing a sub folder at a time.

Yes I tried a check disk and it came out fine. I also ran tests for bad sectors and again came back fine. Used seagates check disk utils and all ok. So it's not the drive. Like Chaosophy says it's probably going to be a corrupt file in there. I haven't tried it through cmd but certainly will, sounds interesting. Seems bizarre as that folder has been fine for years on another drive but when I moved it to the new bigger disk and installed windows 8.1 64 bit I get this. Very annoying. Il try the suggestions and report back, many thanks.

what would be the command line in cmd.exe to copy for instance the folder albums on my D: drive to my E: drive? the folder is in D:\downloaded\albums

Its been too long since i used this.

Thats working fine. I can only conclude it was my permissions became corrupted somehow for the downloaded folder? bizzare.

It will be a permissions problem. You should be able to right click on the folder at top level and set the permissions, Take ownership with your current user and it will allow you to access it.

Get this... I left the cmd box copying the files across and went to work. I came home and it completed it no bother. But now the original folder on the D: drive works fine again! what the hell??

Well I'm confuzzled!

Glad it's sorted but a bit annoying you couldn't get to the bottom of it. Hopefully it won't happen again but keep a backup to be safe !

Have you compared data size, number of files/folders to see if it matches? Any chance you had any hard/soft links in there any where ?

Afraid i spoke to soon. its just happened again on the D: drive folder and now the E: drive too! must be a rouge file in there somewhere? im doing a total format and reinstall of windows anyway, see what happens. This is doing my head in.

I re installed windows 8.1 x64 using a different ISO and all is perfect. I can even play mafia 2 which was throwing up errors using previous install. I must have had a corrupted ISO. Previous I was getting all sorts of weird happenings now I have no problems. Weird one.
