Hi all.

Some really strange behaviour from my PC recently- hopefully someone can shed some light..

A few days ago when I was shutting down, everything happened as normal only rather than everything turning off, the monitor turned off as usual but the CPU and graphics cards and case fans spun up to 100%. There was no output on screen, just all fans going mad. When I hit the power button on the front of the case the fans calm down to normal speeds and the computer started to boot as normal.. weird. Since then when I plug the PC in at the wall instantly all fans crank up to 100%, the PC doesn't start to boot, just 100% fans (this is without hitting the power button on the case) - pushing the case power button caused the PC to boot as normal. Unfortunately the situation has now gone downhill and the on top of the strange fan activity the PC now randomly crashes to a black screen with 100% fans.

I haven't updated any hardware and other than the normal windows updates no new drivers etc. I am guessing this may be a motherboard/PSU issue but if anyone has any ideas please share.

E6300
Gigabyte P55 board
4GB DDR2 (corsair)
520W Corsair Modular PSU
XFX 5770

Probably approaching its 4th Birthday but I'd like to keep it going to save some cash :(

It sounds like you're on the right track with your motherboard PSU hypothesis. It almost seems like the Mobo thinks something is overheating and revving the crap out of the fans to compensate. Although that wouldn't explain why it's doing it when it's off.

At this point with my rig i'd start swapping parts out to try and identify the root of the problem.
