With a long enough PCI-Express Riser Cable could you run a GPU outside the PC case ?
I.E screw it to the top or side of a case

Reason I ask this is I have a Matx HTPC case which has limited airflow and can only take a limited size GPU

cant see why not
though forgive me if i dont pull out my vertically mounted gpu to test that theory
may need a 6/8 pin psu extension possibly too
depending what card etc

Should be fine, Linus from Linus Tech Tips tested this and they got a pretty long way from the case.

I had that, antec case fusion maybe? The nvidia 2060 founders edition (maybe 2060 super now) would be the fastest card that fits (just). I used some soundproofing foam with electrical tape on top to try and form a gasket so it can't recycle its own hot air. Seemingly works well, cpu probably isn't that happy about it, but oh well.
