Hi all,

I've recently been given my Dad's old Plasma TV. We couldn't get a display on either of the HDMI ports with my Sky box, or my PS3, and eventually discovered the problem - the TV doesn't seem to work when devices are set to 1080p. We changed the setting on my Sky Q box from 1080p to 1080i and it works.

Same with the PS3, wouldn't display anything, so I connected the console to a different TV that it does work with and change the resolution from 1080p to 1080i. Connected it back to the Plasma and it works fine.

This is really odd because the TV is a Panasonic Plasma TX-P50U30B and in the manual, and all adverts etc. it says that it supports 1080p.

So why will it not work when the devices connected are set to 1080p?

edit - my amazon firestick wouldn't work with the TV in 1080P either... I had to change the setting on the firestick menu to display in 720P and it works fine.

Amazon firestick resolutions are 1080p 60hz, 1080p 50hz, 720p 60hz, 720p 50hz.

Might help someone else out who has come across this too...

I'd still like to know why a 1080P TV set can't display devices in 1080P resolution though.

In your position, the first thing i would do is just load up the factory default settings. I'm guessing you have no idea what your dad set them to...................and he probably dosn't either :D
The next thing i would do is download the latest firmware for the TV. It then should just work.

Have you tried different cables? both HDMI ports? I was going to suggest it might be a HDCP handshake issue but it's weird that it works at 720P.

1080P is definitely supported according to the Panasonic manual:

HDMI1 : HDMI (Version 1.3 with Deep Colour, x.v.Colour)
HDMI2 : HDMI (Version 1.4 with Audio Return Channel), Deep Colour, x.v.Colour

HDMI 1.3 introduced 1080P so both supported. HDMI 1.4 has HDCP 1.4, HDMI 1.3 has HDCP 1.2.

My old Panasonic plasma had this problem and it was because it was a 720p display.
It outputted 1080i but down scaled to 1280x720, however it could not for some reason display and downscale 1080p. I simply set everything to 720p while I owned it.

those were the X range of panny plasma's OP says he has a U30 which is 1080p.

unless he's mistaken about the model his should to 1080p. whereas the x range was always 720p.
