Strange power issue with Dell monitor

So my monitor has been great for several years..

I can't remenber the exact model, but it's an S-series 27" IPS, 1440p, 165hz, freesyc premium, & HDR400

Once or twice over the last few weeks it's just lost power, like out like a light and struggles to turn back on... no other symptoms.

The rest of the PC is running fine, the speakers are seperate but plugged into the same 8 gang belkin extension cable brick that the PC and monitor are plugged into, PC is still on, internet radio still comming through my speakers.. its almost as if someone just unpluged the power cable for the monitor. Black screen, power button on monitor unresponsive.

I've resolved it by turning the whole lot off at the wall and reseating the monitor kettle lead and DP cable and it randomly works fine again.

I'm at a loss as to whats causing it though.. bad kettle lead or DP cable? bad power button on monitor? bad power brick?

It's probably a failing monitor.

I have a dell s3422dwg and recently the screen started flickering to black for a split second almost like the screens rebooting or something.

happens once a day or so it seems.
I updated my firmware the other day and I'm not sure if it happened since.

I was running on the 4th firmware and the current for mine was 7

The service tag is probably listed on the others tab in your monitors settings

wiggle your DP cable a bit at each end when its plugged in and do the same for the kettle lead on the back of the monitor, that probably rules out a dodgy cable

Thanks.. I'll give the firmware update a go when I get chance.. The problem has only occurred once or twice in the last few months, but I have noticed a bit of strobing when playing forza horizon 5 in a semi regular basis.. But that's a fairly recent phenomenon too...

I put it down to the HDR getting confused somehow as it only seems to happen in that game.

I've never updated the monitor firmware since new so that seems like a sensible place to start..
All though these issues have not existed all along... They are very intermittent and only manifested in the last year or so...

yea mine only did the black thing recently.

I've not noticed any other issues, I never really use HDR and it's still happened.
It's almost like a graphics card driver reset that takes a split second, but it's clearly not.

Maybe something just changed in windows

I see on reddit, the video of that monitor going black seems unlike mine though, mines like a split second flash to black and back

They are talking about G-sync causing it, maybe that's true because I never enabled G0sync for ages after buying the monitor, I didn't realise I had to enable it in the nvidia control panel.

I guess your running freesync? which is basically the same thing.

Mine seems to have stopped with the newest firmware, but my monitor never had issues turning on, I remember when I first set it up, I had issues getting it to recognise DP was connected

EDIT:

I see people talking about freesync on reddit and one of them mentioned capping your fps below your monitors max refresh rate by a couple of digits.
maybe its true and the hz of the signal goes outside what the monitor can display for a fraction of a second, during graphics card clocks changing or something.

your issues could be more serious though since you have power on issues as well, but it could just be a safety thing kicking in and protecting the monitor?

Yeah im running freseync as I have an AMD graphics card...

**but it only seems to hapoen in forza horizon 5***

and I think i run that at uncapped frame rate @120hz.. i could try capping the frames at 90 or 120 or something

It might well just be windows 11 being a spastic with HDR... but there are too many variables to confirm... just to provide some more detail...the monitor doesn't switch off when in active use, but if it goes to sleep, it just won't wake up again, like it's dead, but it's not...

I'm thinking its a windows HDR issue.. but equally ive never updated the firmware on the monitor, either... so I will do that first I think

I thought with G-Sync/Freesync you were supposed to leave the hz alone or at max

the hz is supposed to match the fps, so if your fps is 113 your monitors hz would be due to freesync?

I could be wrong but I thought the whole point of gsync/freesync was to match the hz and fps so if your forcing 120hz in a game it probably disables it?

with gsync theres an option to enable an indicator to show if it's working, I guess AMD has the same
