Strange Problem - I5 3570K + SSD

Hi Guys

Hoping you can assist as resource monitor is no help it seems.

I'm running my I5 3570K at 4.2Ghz on an Asus P8Z77-V LX 2 board with the an M5 128 Pro (Plextor) SSD running the OS.

My problem is that running two displays I often have work or a game on one display with video (YT or VLC or something similar) running on the secondary. When the CPU seems to be utilised and displays a bit of a peak (not even to 80%, but a bump) everything on the secondary display just comes to a juddering halt and then catches up once the CPU has evened out. Audio seems unaffected during this time.

I would add I'm overclocked on it which might be a factory but it just seems a little strange. If the CPU was at 100% I'd sit there and nod, however this can be a spike from 0% to 30% and I get the same issue. Perhaps something I'm missing in the bios?

Any help appreciated as I'm not getting the best out of this rig as I only have 1080p displays.

Cheers in advance

The first thing I'd do is run at stock settings for a bit and see if the problem goes away. Even a mild overclock can go bad over time.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for the heads up. This was on my list anyway and I have made that change and gone back to near stock settings in the BIOS with only a couple of non-OC related changes.

I haven't been able to replicate this again yet which is either a good sign or a bad one depending on how you see it.

I wonder how I might go about troubleshooting why this occurs...the system never falls over, and it's only in certain scenarios....I wonder whether I've missed something (might be RAM not liking the OC?)

How are you testing the OC?

How are you testing the OC?

Originally I used IBT and some Prime to test it over a period of time. No issues with stability.

Since going back to stock, whilst the issue has decreased, I did start noticing it about 30mins after I posted on here saying all was good.

It seems to be linked with CPU spikes when running games (Football Manager..cpu intensive). The CPU spikes, I hear my fan kick in to combat the increased CPU temp and all this happens at the same time a video hangs and then catches up...audio is unaffected.

How much RAM do you have?
How much free space on your OS disk do you have?
What OS are you running?
What VRAM do you have?

Hmm, OK that all sounds fine.

How old is the windows install?

You mentioned you're running a Plextor SSD, how long has that been running? Does the system overall seem OK in terms of performance (Booting etc?) - run a bench test on the SSD - what kinda speeds is it running at? (Read+write)

In your BIOS, what settings have you got (if any) on the PCI lane running the GFX? Gen2/Gen3/Auto?

What power settings have you got applied?

Also, next time it starts chugging, check out the CPU temp - could be thermally throttling.

All good questions:

When this occurs, there is a "slight" increase in CPU temp, but this is a side affect of CPU spikes in terms of utilisation.

The Plextor has been running for around 18 months now.

No other issues on the rig at all...recently went back to defaults on BIOS to remove OC.
