Hey folks,
I currently have two 4870X2s with me, one I just bought last night via the MM and the other a kind chap sent me to try out before I bought it from him. The latter which is a Powercolor card, has some heating issues and glitches all over the place after a few mins of gaming.
OK so this is the problem, I replied to the nice chap and told him what was happening. In the mean time, as I hadn't actually bought it, I decided to look for another 4870X2. Posted in the wanted section and last night collected an XFX version.
So I did a fresh install of Catalyst 9.9 drivers with the XFX card in my system. I thought I give a 3D mark 06 run a bash and as soon as the loading screen finished my screen froze. Restarted the PC and then tried a random game, again as soon as the 3D application kicks in it freezes straight away.
A quick google revealed it to be linked with the AI settings. So bingo, disabled Catalyst AI and everything works...however, no longer in crossfire mode (i.e. single 4870 GPU) which completely defeats the point of a 4870X2.
Just now, I decided to put the Powecolor one back in, simply swapped the cards over with the same drivers already installed. Catalyst AI enabled and it loaded all my games no problem!!! I know the AI was working as the framerate on the GW login screen had almost doubled!
This to me says it's not a software issue but an issue with the XFX 4870X2 itself.
For reference, the rest of my spec is Q6600, 4GB DDR2, Corsair TX 650w PSU, Windows 7 x64 and P5Q-E mobo with latest bios.
Any help would be appreciated immensely as this is really annoying me
