Howzit guys.

I am having a strange problem with one of our users and am at a brick wall..:(

here is the background information..

They have a server in Johannesburg which hosts a web based program called ResRequest.

Now the site is not live as it's mainly used for everyone to access through the LAN. To do this I edit their hosts file to point the name: "live.resrequest" to the server's internal LAN IP address. Then make a URL shortcut to the desktop for http://live.resrequest/

This opens up the website and they can work off that no problem.

I then connected the WAN port of the server to an ADSL line with a static external IP address for outside access. I then did the same setup on my machine with the hosts files. But point the external IP address to the live.resrequest address.

This works for me at home no problems.

However a user who is also not in office, needs access and I did same setup that works on my laptop on to her machine and when she enters live.resrequest the browser just shows the index of the site ( like a FTP view of the files that make up the website )

I have reset Internet explorer, I have tried different browsers, shut down Anti virus, checked DNS etc..I cannot figure out why it wont show the main page...

Any ideas??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No, that would point to the index of the server files as it's meant to. There are four entries in the host files which are:

196.xx.xx.xx resrequest
196.xx.xx.xx live.resrequest
196.xx.xx.xx test.resrequest
196.xx.xx.xx training.resrequest

If I enter the ip address on my machine I also get that index page. The above needs to be in the hosts file in order for it to show main page.

Thanks for the quick reply, I appreciate it. :)

what port does it run on?

tried adding that to the end of the url?

apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree here :)

Actually I've never setup a port for it. It's not a normal ADSL line, its a service called Diginet this side and it goes directly into the WAN switch. The router is not really configurable.

What gets me is that ONLY this user can't work. Everyone else I have tried externally works no problem.

My thoughts are something on the machine it self is blocking it as when watching the browser it displays the company name in the top of the browser for like half a second then shows index/...

So i think it tries to get in, then gets shut down by a 3rd party app or something?

Bledd, would you be willing to try this out on your machine and see if you get to the same web page?

search for..

bledd.

the other bledd doesn't have his enabled :p, woe betide the day he tries to use search for any of his own posts
