The last few days my install of windows xp has started to slow down after being on for about an hour. It seems to have started some time last week. Normaly the pc is on 24-7 and I have had no issues.

I had a look in task manager and my cpu usage is going from about 20 to 70 percent every second. The two possess which seem to be causing this are explorer and system idle task.

Here is a srceen grag after the pc has bee turned on

The mouse jerks across the screen and other programs slow down, videos stutter and the whole system feel slow. restarting the comp clear it for a while.

Here are my processes. The only ones using the CPU when the pc is left alone are explorer and system idle process. How do you turn off indexing ? I will see if it has an effect.

Yeah the process shot was taken at the same time. Explorer spikes from about 10% to 40% and the memory usage goes up and down at the same time. It's very strange I have installed no new software and the system has never done this before. I have to restart if I want to play game or watch tv or video.

It's got worse. It tried looking at the nvidia display manager and it was flickering in time with the CPU usage. So I unistalled the driver. Then when I tried to reinstall it, it wont. Keeps coming up saying it had detected another installation running. I can't find that. As for patches and hot fixes, I have strong suspicions that this all started after windows updated it self last time, about a week ago.

Ok managed to fix that, got them reinstalled but the problem persists. If i bring up the nividia control panel it "refreshes" every second and I can't change any settings.

I have tried all of the above but it's still playing up. Here are 3 screen shots. One at start up, one about 30mins later and one an hour later.

The longer you leave to on the worse it gets. And I can't change any graphics driver settings either.

I have just unistalled all the drivers off the system and re installed them. No difference. I have howver discovered that the device manager window does the same thing, refreshes every second, like it is expanding and collapsing the list every second. Something somewhere is definitely snafu.
