strange problems with broadband

hi everyone

i'm having some problems with my home broadband and a colleague advised me to post on overclockers for some help, so fingers crossed you'll be able to assist me...

first of all, my isp is bt and i'm on option 3 which provides me with up to 8Mbps broadband...

i've been out of my house for 18 months and i've recently moved back home. when i got my broadband back online i was only receiving around 1 to 1.5Mbps download speed max. i spoke to support for a week or so which was very painful, and i finally managed to get a throughput of around 6Mbps, which i am happy with based on my line sync speed etc

so, i thought all my problems had been solved, but about 3 days ago i noticed that browsing web sites seemed to be very slow. i thought it was just a blip, but it's been happening every night since - i'm actually only getting around half a meg!!!

i tested it this morning at around 8am and i was still getting 6Mbps
surely someone on the street can't be hogging all that amount of bandwidth can they?

thanks

john

Try a reliable speed test (which elimates speedtest.net), like some of the suggestions in the sticky. While you're at it, find your IP profile from the BT Speedtest (instructions also in the sticky).

What's your modem connected at? Sync rate, SNR margin and attenuation would all be useful - your router should give those.

never had a problem with it

As an example I'm pulling 14,400kb/s from my newsgroup provider, yet speedtest.net says my download bandwidth is 10,600kb/s, that's a long way from being accurate. Sites like speedtest.net are a waste of time (and bandwidth).

at present, speedtester.bt.com reports the following...

Your DSL connection rate: 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 467 kbps

so i can see that the ip profile and sync speeds are fine, it's just the poor throughput! but i would guess that in the morning the throughput rockets to over 5Mbps

any ideas what could be causing this?

thanks

I had the opposite problem where my real life download speed was around 500kbps backed up by speedtest.net and a few others.

BT speedtester throughput said I was getting 2500kbps.

I've seen so many posts in different forums about BT speeds only being around 500kbps since September it has to be more than coincidence.

I've been having problems with Be, there DNS each nite this week has gone down at 11:30, can't even ping it....
however i can still get to the BBC.....

Check that BT aren't doing any work overnite on your exchange, they probly won't know was they don't no half the things that go on on there own network.....
