This one has me baffled...
I built this system (in sig) about 6 months ago and it's been the most stable machine I've had in the 14 years I've been building/tinkering with PC's. Until last week it hadn't had one hiccup.....not one BSOD or anything. 100% reliable.
Then last week I was just browsing the net and it restarted without warning. A couple of days later it did the same thing while just typing something in Word. And again just now when I was browsing these forums. No errors - just a system restart.
I have Windows set to NOT just restart if it crashes, and in my experience that usually means PSU rather than RAM which would usually give a BSOD. It has also never crashed once during a game and can run Prime forever with no problem, so I'm think that also rules out the RAM and overheat issues - I've monitored the temps and they all look fine anyway.
I haven't changed anything with the system either. I did try some different drivers for the graphics and sound card, but that hasn't helped. I've run antivirus and anti spy/malware with no issues reported.
That just leaves me with the PSU. The voltages look fine in Speedfan, but I know software readings can't be trusted too much. However, I would have thought it would have issues under load during gaming or benchmarking - not just sitting there browsing the net or typing
The PSU is an Antec 550W modular. Oh, and I'm still on WinXP.
Any other ideas what could cause this before I start thinking about RMA-ing the PSU?
Thanks!
EDIT: I'm also going to rule out power spikes as the machine is running off a very nice surge protector.
