strange temperatures at idle?!

Hey guys :)

I have had my Noctua NH-D14 for some time now and am getting annoyed with the temps. The CPU is the 965 and it isn't overclocked and is running at 3.4GHz at 1.35v. I am getting idle temps of 45-50°c :O. And before you say " it is summer, it's normal" my room temp is at a constant 20°. I have tried reseating the heatsink many times and I am using MX4 thermal paste.

I have no explanation why it is reaching these temps at idle. I had the H50 before this and, tbh, it was quieter and kept the CPU at around the 30° mark in summer.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Could be the heatsink isn't seated correctly or too much/too little thermal paste

Try removing fan and paste and re applying paste with small pea size blob and refit the fan

AMD running higher at temp is normal.

Maybe we can try disable ALL startup apps using the MSCONFIG command.
This can help to make sure no 3rd party apps running at the background and causing the CPU to heat up.

As soon as the CPU temp is normal in the games or during the normal uses, I would not reseat the parts that often.

Hope this helps!
