Strange URL with no TLD

Can anyone explain how http://to resolves without a TLD?

TO is the TLD...

Technically speaking, the URL is http://to.

The dot at the end signifies the root nameservers.

I guess you're using Firefox? It won't work in IE or Chrome.

I assume it's just defaulting to .com when you miss the tld..

Correct, yer it doesn't have a DNS record. Just browser dependant address auto-completion.

I know to is the TLD for Tonga but it's just a TLD on it's own.

Good point, his example didn't have the . though so it auto completed to to.com

You just ninja edited your reply, it makes sense now you mention it is the root nameserver.

It's my DNS server that is doing the completion so people probably get different results

Daz is right.. as is the op. The OP's link will autocomplete to www.to.com, which is a company in Germany seemingly selling a product called "Thinking Objects" however http://to. is a url shortening site.
