Strange video colour/gamma problem

Hi, bought a x1900xt-x a few months back from ocuk.

Ive got a strange problem to do with video gamma/colour settings. Basically i run my desktop gamma and colour setting at default levels, as they are in the latest cat drivers.

My Desktop looks fine. If i run a video, doesn't matter what application - its VERY dark. I go in to the cat control center, and go to avivo colour settings. I turn the gamma up a bit, so the video looks right and it's fine.

At some point afterwards, either after playing a game or rebooting the system - the gamma drops again (video's are dark again). I go back in to the control panel, to the video colour settings section - and the gamma level is the same as i left it. if i turn it up at this point, it goes really bright - and then if i go back down a notch, it goes to the brightness i left it at last time. So it's like the gamma is wanting to run at a default level, despite what the cat control center is set to.

Ive tried installing other drivers to no help. I even installed the AVIVO add on to the normal catalyst drivers, but that had no effect other than to give me a nasty scratch sound when going in and out of games. So i got rid of that quickly.

I'm running DVI in to my Viewsonic 19" flat screen. XP, SP2, fully windows updated. Clean system, no other crap dvd or video software from motherboard etc.

Anyone got any ideas or seen this before?
