booting problems
A friend asked me to look at their PC the other day, they said it kept popping up with ati2evxx error, and when the system updated to fix it automatically, it told them to reboot. At which point it locked up halfway through the vista bootup. The only way they could fix it was to go through the vista repair function and go back to a previous recovery point in order to start the pc up again. at which point point it shows the ati2evxx error again.
By ignoring it they can use the pc normally and don't have any problem with it. I thought the drivers were corrupted so I downloaded the latest drivers, and tried to follow the update procedure which I understood to be uninstall current drivers then run the update program. this resulted in only being able to boot into safe mode which wouldnt allow me to install the new drivers. I managed to roll back to the earliest recovery point I could find and what with it being late at night and having a functioning pc, I left. I'm trying to come up with a way to fix it before she throws it off a cliff.
It's an Acer Aspire, dont know the model number as they have very little documentation, vista 32, and as far as I can tell from the device manager, a radeon XPress 1200, 1250 or 1300. depending on which drivers it thinks are most suitable. without the specs I don't know for sure. it also shows as having 2 hard drives, both about 74Gb but ones almost blank and I couldnt access it in safe mode, didnt have time to try once in normal mode.
Can someone suggest what my next step should be, I'm trying to talk them into letting me put all their data on their old pc so i can bring this one home and look deeper into it. they don't have a windows disk or a recovery disk, so I cant just reinstall windows for them. I strongly suspect the shop that sold it to them just over a year ago was pulling a fast one somewhere what with it being a small local shop.
